STEM Education careers inspired in girls by tiara

Tiara a big hit at Solana Santa Fe Space Sciences Festival

Had an absolutely amazing fun time at Solana Santa Fe elementary’s Space Science Festival May, 2012. Knowing it would attract the girls, I brought along my Miss America-type crown for display. When the girls wanted to wear it and play with it, I then talked about the chemicals that make the crystals, lead and oxygen, and how they’re both formed in space. The first is formed when a star explodes, the latter in the nuclear fusion process of a large star. The girls LOVED it!!! We then talked shoes and nail polish, demonstrating that you CAN be a female in love with science AND still be a girl who wears a tiara or crown, really high heels, and nail polish. You can be a cool girl scientist.

Gravitational Lensing, Transit Method for extrasolar planets amongst demonstrations

Then we used marbles to demonstrate gravitational lensing, and styrofoam balls to illustrate the transit method for finding extrasolar planets and the forthcoming Transit of Venus.

STEM Education skills taught by tiara
Lovely ladies from Solana Santa Fe Elementary at their Space Science Festival learn how a tiara is a STEM Education tool.

All in all, we had WAY more fun than the boys driving the mock Mars Rovers AND we learned way more science. I can hardly wait to do this again.
